I used to take photos of plants, but not much now. When I saw the roses in Balboa Park, it kinda reminded me of my high school and college time as well as my friends in Taiwan because yellow rose used to be my favorite . . .

Balboa Park is located in San Diego, very close to downtown and is right next to the famous San Diego Zoo. After passing through the fountain at the entrance, I proceeded to the Visitor Center, which is located inside the House of Hospitality. Nearby the Visitor Center is an outdoor Speckels Organ Pavilion and there is a scheduled musical concert every Sunday afternoon at 2pm. I had to watch Chien-ming Wang pitch on that day and missed the concert by the time I got there. Oh, well . . .

Also by the Visitor Center is the Alcázar Garden , which is modeled after the Reales Alcázares in Sevilla, Spain . I happened to visit Sevilla this May. While I visited Alcázares, I was actually stuck there for a while because of a storm. I stayed inside the palace and did not go out to the garden. However, the garden is HUGE. The whole Reales Alcázares is BIG and ornate; well, it was for the royal family. So I am a little bit disappointed in Balboa. Regardless, it still provides a nice place for urban population to stroll and relax.

Other than flowers, there is also a garden for butterflies - Zoro Garden. They even painted the flowers and butterflies on a wall - I guess it’s for education purpose.

Left: By the Veteran’s Memorial Garden

After I passed the Cabrillo Bridge , I was amazed to see this:

Americans really love their pets. Inside this area, dogs do not need to be on leash. If you are inside and bit by any dog, you cannot sue the dog owner. Dogs are free to run around here and fight each . . .

How relaxing he was!

This is Old Globe Theatre; I did not plan to see a show that night, so I took a picture. Behind me is one of their theatre spaces – you can see the lights on the booms.

*******************************************************************

I returned to Balboa Park on Tuesday, why? Because some museums will be free on different Tuesday.

Now that I think of it, the museums here are fairly small in scale. After you visited some large museums in Madrid and National Museum of Palace in Taiwan as well as working at the Getty now, the collections here are not very appealing. However, the Spanish style architecture is neat - good for photos.

Two of my favorites were Spanish Village Arts Center and the Tram.

Spanish Village Arts Center was built for California-Pacific International Exposition in 1935-6. There are 35 studios and more than 50 artists working and displaying several types of arts. Sometimes they offer classes, too.

I met a photographer, who is just perfect for PR. He talked to every single visitor and asked them to leave email addresses before they walked out of the studio. The next day, I received his email, thanking me for visiting and wishing me the best at the Getty. He was a chemical professor at an University in Oregon. After he retired, he becomes a full-time photographer. He did a lot of under-water photography – so awesome.

* Police car inside Village has to be different from others - very cute

What attracted me most was these wood puzzles in the shape of animals with spelling integrated. So lovely! (Each costs $15 and above)

* No same animal has the same design. Check out these two TREX

Tram is another attraction in Balboa Park . Red Tram is particular for transportation within the park. However, the one I rode on that day was not red . . .
* I took the orange one.

Tram driver was Jim, very funny person; he gave each of us a paper fan when everyone got onto the tram. It was quite a warm day, so a fan was helpful. By his name tag was a bell that he could pull to signal the tram crossing an intersection. There are so many pedestrians in the park – it is definitely a good idea to keep them alert. By the way, if you think the driver provides good service, tips are appreciated!

The Tram route is fixed. If you want to visit the park in more depth but feel too tired to walk, you can always rent a bike.

Kids can sit in the front; one bike can accommodate several adults
*Sun light was too strong /

* By the entrance of San Diego Art Institute

If you want to visit Balboa Park , parking is free - although parking lots are spread out, you might have to walk quite a bit. The Visitor Center , Museums, and certain Gardens are open between 9am and 5pm but they are all different. Some charge; some don’t. I recommend that you check the time in advance, especially if there is something in particular you want to see. As for outdoor space, there are always visitors until sunset. If you miss any of the indoor exhibitions, it is always fun wandering outside.
