When it comes to Dim sum, everyone has very different opinion. So far I have tried 4 restaurants in LA area: NBC Seafood was somewhat greasy whereas 888 Seafood was just average; as for New Capital Seafood, there were not many choices (too many customers at that very moment???) and I couldn't remember it well. So, that left Ocean Star, which I enjoyed better.
There were a few reasons that I liked it better: first of all, the taste was neither too salty nor too greasy for me. Secondly, I like to see carts being pushed around. It’s always a wonder to ask the waitresses to open the lids and see what’s inside. As for the third reason, I will tell you later.
I got a few colleagues to visit Ocean Star today. We had 9 dishes/plates in total – we had small stomachs; I thought four of us would eat more actually!
* Shrimp in noodle roll and Shou-mai are almost a must for each visit.
* Rice wrapped in Lily leaves was smaller than the one in New Capital Seafood in
* Pork Bun was a bit disappointing; there was barely filling inside.
* Shrimp mount on Tofu was great.
* Clam has always been my favorite; I even ate green peppers, which I usually don't. But I did wish for less sauce.
* Sesame balls needed to serve hot, and were tasty. Last time, they served fried green-tea ball and it was awesome. I asked an actress and she said they didn’t serve it anymore. How sad!
* Fish-fin soup was not bad but it’s pricey.
* Chou-jou dumpling (hard to translate this one) was all right - better than the one in 888 if my memory served.
I heard that dining on the weekend costs almost twice as much as it does on weekdays, but what can you do when you need to work?
Although not every dish was perfect, we still enjoyed it very much. The last reason I wanted to mention was that a waitress left me a very good impression. The first time Mary and I went there, we asked her to recommend a dessert. She said the fired green-tea cake was good, so we ordered it. And I asked what about the purple one? She shook her head and said, the green-tea flavor was better. We tried, and indeed, it was wonderful.
Today when she passed by, we said we wanted Shou-mai. She said she would ask that cart to come over here. After a while, we talked so much that we even forgot we asked for Shou-mai. She passed by again and asked whether Shou-mai cart was here. We said no. She yelled out loud “why?” (I think she meant “why not”) and disappeared. She then returned with Shou-mai right away. She is a good sales person, that’s all I could say.
Linde brought us Easter Eggs and before we left, we gave her two. She looked very excited!
* However, the Jasmin tea could improve . . .
